“Gone are the days when emotional intelligence was seen as a soft skill,” says Wiehann Rademan, Head: Assessment and Development Centres at SanlamConnect. “Rather, it is an essential skill – especially when it comes to business.”

Weighing up emotional intelligence

“Many books have been written on this essential set of life skills that we all need – not only to survive, but also to thrive,” says Wiehann. “The days of viewing emotional intelligence as a soft skill are long gone. Rather, today, it is seen as an essential skill, especially when it comes to business.” Wiehann explains that it’s a crucial part of dealing with everyday life, as well as managing the demands and stresses of a career.

The business side of things

Wiehann explains how we could understand it in a business context: “Key aspects of emotional intelligence include interpersonal-skills such as adaptability, stress management, and your general mood and attitude.” He adds that each of these dimensions can further be broken down into more detailed and nuanced aspects, such as assertiveness, ‘which forms part of interpersonal skills,” he says, as well as problem-solving, “which, in turn, falls into the realm of adaptability.”

“Without a doubt, these skills are needed in order to thrive in the workplace,” says Wiehann. “It assists us to operate at our best amid challenging times, and contributes to the thriving of teams, businesses and societies. South Africa is known as a super-resilient nation, and surely emotional intelligence can be found in many of those around us?”
